Couple win £200,000 game show prize

Davina McCall hosts the Million Pound Drop Live

A married couple walked away with £200,000 after becoming the most successful contestants ever on Channel 4’s The Million Pound Drop gameshow.

Sophie and Rick Dickens were awarded the cash after correctly answering eight multiple-choice questions on Friday night.

At the start of the live TV show the couple were presented with £1 million in cash held in bundles of £25,000.

The game requires contestants to gamble the money by splitting it on the answers they believed to be correct, with the aim of holding on to as much as possible over eight questions.

If the money is placed on a wrong answer, it falls down a chute and out of the clutches of the contestants.

When Mrs Dickens, 25, first started moving the cash, she said: “Actual £50 notes. I have never even held a £50 note before.”

After answering the first three questions correctly and holding on to the £1 million cash prize, the couple opted to split the money on the fourth question.

They were asked: “Which of these celebrity children is male?”

Undecided between Destry Spielberg and Sage Stallone, the Dickens’ put £500,000 on each of the answers. They secured the half a million when they were told it was Sage Stallone.

In a tense final question, the couple, from Northwich, Cheshire, were asked: “Who speaks first in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo or Juliet?” They put all of their remaining £200,000 on Romeo. When they discovered they had gambled correctly the couple screamed with delight and hugged each other.
